New life for the Schwinn?

So today is a two-fer! Two posts on one day!

Yesterday at our VW car club meet, I was talking with one of my friends. He was showing a couple of us his wife's new car, a VW Atlas. He mentions that he had the wheels powder-coated to match the Atlas's color. They looked great. As we were talking, he mentioned that he had the wheels powder-coated by a fellow VW guy who owns a bicycle shop in Cheyenne. That set off my thoughts!

Over three years ago, my brother rescued a 1987 Schwinn Super Sport from being recycled. A previous owner had refinished the frame with a rattle can black paint job. The poor bike had lived a hard life but it still has potential.

This particular model was the second from the top model from Schwinn in 1987, excluding the handbuilt Paramount line. This particular model featured a Columbus Tenax tubing frame built in the USA, in Schwinn's Chicago. It was spec'd with the hot Shimano 600 EX SIS gruppo.

So what are my plans for my SS? As you can see from the photo, this poor bike was subjected to a poor black paint job, but I have everything else for the bike.

I can assure you that the magenta/white colors will not be seen again, along with the . I'm kind of leaning towards doing the frame in a light blue color, maybe similar to the color of my VW Bug. All of the original components are in good shape, so they will be reused (unless I can find something in a better conditiion). The only upgrades on the plan include my original LOOK Sport pedals (that I bought in '86 or so), a saddle upgrade (Selle Italia or Brooks), and maybe some clip-on aerobars.

As I make progress, I will be sure to share them here!
