Yes, it's Friday and today is when I swim in the morning. But this isn't any ordinary Friday solo swim, as I was joined by my friend Gina. We were both weren't looking forward to a usual workout, so I improvised a 2,000 yd workout consisting mainly of kick sets. Gina and I discussed how we both learned to competitively swim from the same coach, that our similarities are indeed learned.
Fact one: neither Gina or myself have a strong kick. We both get something in the neighborhood of 95% of our power in the water from our shoulders and our pulls. The kick is basically a technique to keep our body horizontal and not dragging our legs along behind. Speaking for myself, I have found that using a pull buoy yields faster times for me than kicking. Strange but true.
The second trait that Gina and I share is that we both breathe every two strokes, on our right side. Yes it is a very common trait among swimmers and it's a trait I'm trying to break, but no luck so far. It's too engrained into my muscle memory apparently. :)
And now for the Go The Distance report: today's 2,000 yards now places me at 62.24 miles for 2014. It's slow going and at this rate I'll be happy with getting to 150 miles by December 31st.
Until next time, enjoy your Friday!!
