Looking back at this web site

It's been kind of quiet over here on my blog. It's not that I haven't been doing anything, to the contrary, but I've been working on some other projects that I am eager to share at a later date.

One project I've been working on is once again dabbling with my personal web site. I registered my first personal domain name back in 1998, tunacan.net. I used it as a marketing tool for my freelance technology related services. It also provided a place to share a few of my early web site projects.

In 1999, I decided I wanted to do an actual personal web site, a place to send family, friends, and contacts to see who I was, what I was into, and what I was up to. So in April I registered my "personal" web domain: tunacan.org. For the next 10-15 years, I would update the web site with new pages and regular posts, basically my mini-blog.

Now you can defintiely tell the age of the web site by looking at the page from the Wayback Machine website. The first version used a white and aqua theme, with bookmarks flanking the updates and the site navigation on top. The logo I created with a program called Paint Shop Pro. The initial layout was written by hand following the HTML 4 standard. I would later use a program called HoTMetaL Pro to update and expand the site.

The next facelift of the site really changed the look. This time I went with a black and blue color scheme, with a more modern look to it. A graphic designer friend made the logo for me, and I played with a graphics editing program to come up with the page title. The site navigation was moved to the right hand side of the web site.

It was at this design that the site slowly faded away with age. The interest and time to invest into maintaining it were just not a reality. The domain host disappeared, but I kept the domain registration current, primarily for my email address.

Now that I've got some time and resources to invest into the site, I decided that my two tunacan domains names were in need of being restructured and repurposed. In true introvert fashion, I spent time thinking about what I wanted to do with the sites. Here's the plan for these web sites:

This web site, tunacan.org, will be my blog for everything going on in my life. I'm tagging the posts as to which topic it is about, like VWs or my health/athletic endeavors. As I looked over my earlier versions of TCO, I realize that I posted pretty regularly, sharing the things going on in my life and things occupying my brain. I really want to get back to doing posts like that. I'm thinking of trying to commit myself to doing at least one post a week (Monday night at 8:00 PM), but also posting at other times during the week.

The original web domain, tunacan.net, has returned as a general personal website. I'm using Google Sites to host and develop the site. My thought is that I'm already invested into the Google ecosystem, maintaining a web site within it should be easier, thus making updates and expansion more frequented. Right I've created a bare bones web site, primarily with links to my other current web projects. I'm working on content to expand the site.

I know it sounds geeky, but I am excited to be doing this again. I hope that you will stop by both web sites and check out the work I'm doing!
