Another VW Saturday fun day!

I know what you are saying: Tom, ANOTHER blog post about VWs?! The sun is out, the day time temperatures are nice, and the Bug is running, so its more time behind the wheel of the Bug! Seriously, the weather is always a factor up here in Laramie. Once the mercury drops to near freezing ranges, my time out in the garage and working on the Bug is going to seriously dwindle. During the frozen half of the year is when I'll be delving into other hobbies! Promise!

This last weekend I had a great Saturday driving the Bug! I had been contemplating whether I wanted to drive the Bug to the first event but I decided to take the plunge and I'm glad I did!

The local car club The Working Class Car Club was a car show called the September Show & Shine. It was going to be held in the parking lot of a local credit union and our local radio station was going to be there doing a live broadcast. Renee was at work that day, Isaac was with his father, so I had the day to myself, so I thought "Why not?!" It sounded like it was going to be a fun time and maybe I will get to network with some local car folks.

Luckily for me, the Bug fired up that morning and she seemed to be running "Ok", at least well enough as she has been. I stopped in the Sonic Drive-In drive-thru for something to eat and then headed across the street for the show. Since the Bug wasn't running tip-top and she doesn't have shiny paint, I elected to drive in via the back way into the parking lot. I just didn't want to be driving through the middle of the show, where people were walking and checking out cars.

There were probably a good dozen or dozen and a half cars there. They all were great looking cars with paint and polished brightwork. Seeing as the Bug is still wearing its rough original paint and the crappy spray can primer job that we did in the early 90s, she was going to look out of place in that line up, so I parked her on the west side of the parking lot.

As the show progressed, I had walked around and checked out the cars there. There were two notable cars for this European car guy were a Porsche 928S and a Morris Minor. The 928S was a beautiful original car in what appeared to be its factory red color.

The other notable car to me was a radically modified Morris Minor. I got a chance to chat with the owner/builder of this Morris and he shared just what he had done. Aesthetically he explained that he chopped the top and lengthened the wheelbase. He also shared that he had drag-raced this car in both ¼ and ⅛ mile racetracks. It was quite an impressive build!

About halfway into the show, I was approached by someone from the car club. They said that the credit union office was now closed and they said that we could park in the drive-up teller spots, which put us closer to the action. I got in the Bug and moved her around into the drive-thru.

Throughout the three hours, I had some great conversations with a variety of car folks. I was having a great time talking about cars and learning about stuff I didn't know. Looking forward to the next local car show!

Later that day..

Later in the day, my wife called me and said that she and her daughter were going to be doing equipment testing at her work that night. That meant that my grandson Isaac and I were going to be on our own for the evening. I

Before I continue, let me share that my 5 year old grandson LOVES riding in the Bug. Up until today, he's only been in short rides around the neighborhood. The novelty is so extreme for him. He says the exhaust sound is too loud, but yet he still wants to go for a ride in it. As we driven around the neighborhood, I glance over at him and I see that he has a huge smile on his face, a great indicator of how much he loves these rides.

I was a bit tired from being in the sun all day today, I decided that we would get properly seated in the Bug and we would run through the drive-thru of his favorite restaurant: McDonald's. He was so excited for this trip. As we drove down the street that connects our end of the city with the section with the fast food restaurants he made a comment about how far away it was! He's ridden in my daily many, many times and never said that, but I think he was saying that this was so long a trip in the Bug.

As we waited for our food to be prepared, I took this photograph of him. He is truly loving the Bug rides!
