Our local car show, the inaugural "Cars In The Yard", is about five days from now. The weather has finally started to cool off and with some available vacation time, I've been busy in the garage trying to get the WyoLook Bug running! I really want to get her to the show. I especially want her there, as my brother will be driving up in his '67 Bug for the show! It would be great to have the Slider brothers and their VWs in the show!
So this week I have the following things to do before I can try starting her:
- Oil change
- Ignition tune up
- plug wires
- spark plugs
- distributor cap & rotor
- new battery
- adjust valves
- install new fuel filler hoses
- fresh fuel
If all goes well with this work, I should be able to start her up later this week. If we are being honest, I don't have high expectations; if she starts and can drive safely to the Prison on the day of the show (and back), I will be happy! The subsequent weeks will be about fine-tuning her, especially getting the carb tuned for the 7200 foot altitude. The carb is currently tuned for about 1000 ft, so she is going to be burning a bit too much fuel!
Update June 25th, 2021: Well it seems that that the Bug isn't going to make it to the show after all. My brother and I tried to get her running this evening, but we were unsuccessful. It has become apparent that the fuel pump didn't survive the 10+ hibernation. If we fill the carburetor float bowl up with fuel, she will start and run, as long as there is fuel in the carburetor. As soon as the fuel runs out, it stalls. A bit more testing and we are confident the fuel pump is dead. Well hopefully next year for the show!
