For many years, one of my favorite social networks was Google+. I found the way it worked, and its integration into the other Google services, to be quite handy. The user interface(UI) was also quite powerful to use, as long as you understood it. The best feature was the ability to place the people you follow into 'circles'. The circles allowed you to browse just the friends in that circle, or post something that only the people in that circle could see.
Well the honeymoon was ending with the 2018 announcement that Google was terminating the public side of Google+, as it just never caught on with the public. I remained a regular user until the very end.

R.I.P. Google+ 2011-2019 |
With the impending demise of Google+, I started to check out other non-mainstream social networks. Some of them were focused on a specific topic, but there were a few that were general purpose networks. These were the networks I decided to try. A few months of setting up accounts on these networks and trying to find people I felt comfortable engaging, I found that the one I liked the best was MeWe.
With the impending closing of Google+, MeWe offered a Google+ migration service. This allowed you to take your G+ posts/media and transfer them over to MeWe. This allowed me to keep my previous work and it allowed me to get up to speed on MeWe with a plethora of shares. The transfer went well and in less than a day, I had a MeWe account with all of my posts from the start of Google+.
Since 2019, I've occasionally checked in on my MeWe account, but I just wasn't finding the engagement that I was looking for. Fast forward to November 2020, the U.S. Presidential elections and what many saw as censorship occurring on Facebook and Twitter, there was interest in alternative social networks. Many of my conservative friends were going over to Parler, but I noticed a good number of my friends in the VW hobby were going over to MeWe.
This last February, after having not logged into MeWe in probably 3-4 months, I discovered that a VW group I had created there had really taken off. There were many people sharing posts and chatting. It was quite surprising how busy the group was. The engagement was looking many times better and making MeWe a daily stop on social networks was going to need to be committed to.
If you are on MeWe or have been thinking about joining MeWe, stop by and check out my MeWe profile: https://www.mewe.com/i/tomslider and if you are into VWs, check out my VW group Air Cooled VW Fans! I am going to use MeWe primarily for the VW talk, but I will post other things to my profile. It is always exciting to explore the world out there and learn more about our world.
