It was definitely strange being at the pool during the week in the morning. I'm so used to being at work at this time, so walking on the deck was a bit strange. Instead of hearing the humming of 36 Dell computers, the occasional phone call, and the chatter of teenagers, I was greeted with the sound of splashing water, age group swimmers working their way back and forth the lanes, and the warmth of the sun on my back.
Since this was a last minute decision, I had to write up my own workout as I swam. I paid particular attention to making sure the workout was going to address those areas that I wanted to work on. Our coaches have been found of freestyle sprint sets lately, with little distance or stroke work. Those were the areas I wanted to work on.
I don't know if I've shared with you that when I do swim meets, I tend to favor breaststroke events and distance events. In fact, my go to event at a regular USMS meet is the 200 breaststroke. I have also been known to supplement that with the 200 backstroke. The reason for this is that I discovered a few years back that very few people compete in those events: they prefer the shorter sprints or longer freestyle events, but only a few tackle the 200 back and breast. It turns out that there aren't very many of us that want to invest the time into training for longer distance stroke events.
June 13, 2014 Warm Up (600 yds) | Set 3 (1000 yds)
|
This morning's 3,000 yards places my Go The Distance total now at 53.52 miles for 2014. I had hoped to be at twice that number by this time in the year, but obstacles always seemed to keep me from getting the yards I wanted this winter and spring. My mission is to get as many yards as I can this summer and hopefully by December 31st, I will hopefully be at 150 miles.
