I'm in a great mood now! Pet Shop Boys Christmas singleShortly I will be picking up the truck and I will have wheels again! Yay!

I've been wanting to share my latest music obsession. The Pet Shop Boys have done a cover of Coldplay's "Vida La Vida" and mix it with their song "Domino Dancing". I wasn't aware of this mix until I purchased a copy of PSB's "Christmas" single a few months ago. I purchased the single because it featured another song that I had yet to get a copy of, their "It Doesn't Oftern Snow At Christmas Time". It was previously only released to members of their fan club back in the '90s.

So as I am listening to this single, I hear this song "Vida La Vida" and think "Hmmmm... this song sounds familiar but I can't place it..." I head on over to Wikipedia and vioia, I find that it's not a PSB original but a Coldplay song. All Petheads know that PSB has done some cool covers, so the fact that they did this song isn't surprising.

If you want to hear their rendition of this song, you can hear it on Youtube. There is also a live version from Glastonbury 2010 on Youtube that is great. It's just a great song and a great cover. Thanks PSB! -- TS

What a week!! Here's the latest news on the truck. After a lot of head scratching, probing, testing, remove, analyzing, and anything else we remotely thought would help us figure what was wrong, Dad's friend Ken diagnosed the problem in 15 minutes: busted timing belt!! ARGH! Knowing that replacing the belt can be quite a task, even for a seasoned mechanic, we elected to have the truck towed to a mechanic. The truck is now at George's Shell here in Fontana getting the belt and a few ancillary parts replaced. At the moment I am waiting for the phone call from the mechanic to go pick up the truck. It will be good to have a running vehicle again.

A benefit of this event is that I'm gradually figuring out how to use my bike to get around locally. I keep meaning to get out there, but something keeps me from going. Of course this shows that my neighborhood and surrounding area is very unfriendly to bicycle traffic. A lot of the streets aren't wide enough for riding on the shoulder, so cars are forced to ride around you. A lot of businesses don't even have a place to lock up a bike! One step in getting away from our dependence on fossil fuel and in becoming a healthier society is to get back on our bikes.

The other plus side is that it's given me a boost to getting the Bug and the Imp running. Dad and I rearranged the VWs in my car port the other day so that I can get to the Bug easier. Right now I'm formulating a plan of what needs to be done to make it running and reliable for daily use. Once it's running, I'll focus on getting the Imp running, just in time for the summer. :) -- TS

Everything was going so well this week and then "it" happened. On the way home from work on Wednesday, the truck just stopped running. I tried to get it restarted, but it wasn't taking it. I was able to coast it through the intersection and into the parking lot of a gas station about a mile from my house. After a couple of hours of trying to figure out what was wrong and fiddling with stuff, a tow truck was summoned and towed back home. And it still sits there.

My dad has come over a few days to help and I think we've got it narrowed down to a faulty fuel pump. Of course replacing a fuel pump on a newer vehicle is easier said than done. I've been struggling for the last day and a half trying to drop the tank without taking the bed off, but this afternoon Dad and I decided it was our only option. So now the bed sits cock-eyed and we've encountered the next obstacle: the fuel fittings to the tank. It's one struggle after another and I'm really tired. I just want this thing to run.

I think this episode has made me motivated to get my old VWs running again. I need to find the money to get the Bug and the Imp running reliably, as I am going stir crazy not having a running car. I really need a back up. Something to get to work, to swim practice, to the grocery store, etc. The necessities. This also makes me appreciate the simplicity of the old VW system. The fuel pump is right in front of you as you open the decklid. Two 13mm wrench size nuts, two hoses, and you have it out. Until then, my wheeled transportation is my bike. :) -- TS

Today is the last day of vacation. Two weeks seems like such a long time, but it always seems to fly by. I have to say it's been quite an enjoyable break this year. One of the highlights was definitely the mountain bike race a week ago. It was so much fun to be cheering on our TBirds and seeing them race in front of a hometown crowd. It's obvious that I have some work to do on my bicycling photography, but the fun part is learning.

The other highlight was the banquet for the YHS girls water polo. It's kind of a let down when the season comes to an end, but the girls played very well this. I hand it to all of them for the dedication they've shown to this underappreciated sport. To the seniors, it was nice to see them one last time with the team. -- TS

Happy Pi Day! Happy Pi Day!

For those of you who are not "math people", you might be thinking "What?! What is Pi Day?" Pi is a number used in mathematical circles that starts with the number 3.14, so on March 14th, i.e. 3/14, we math geeks like to celebrate Pi Day. It's just a fun way of sharing our love of math with the rest of the world. :) -- TS

Wow, what a day! 2012 Hog Canyon Classic, Yucaipa CA Today was the 2012 Hog Canyon Classic! This was the first time that the SoCal High School Mountain Bike League has held a race at the Wildwood Canyon State Park. In fact this was the first time that Wildwood has ever hosted a mountain bike race, so it was exciting to see the venue and the course and to have it so close to home.

Of course I got there with my camera in hand. In addition to the backpack full of camera equipment, I brought along another key part of my day at the race: my Klein Pulse Pro mountain bike! I visited the park yesterday and decided that the best way to get around the park was going to be on a bike, so I threw the Klein in the back of the truck and drove up to the park. It was a little tricky for an inexperienced mountain bike rider like myself to ride some parts of the course (hey I was roadie back in the day!), but I survived and my Klein did it's job with no complaint.

So you want to know the exciting stuff, right? Namely, how did Yucaipa do?! Our boys and girls did well and earned a third place overall team trophy. We missed second place by only a few points! Alex Bagg (varsity) and Austin Smith (JV) both made the podium with their excellent races.

I don't have a gallery yet of the best photos I took today. I took over 800 photos, and with this being my first SoCal league race, they aren't what I had hoped. I will be going through them and try to get a collection on my Picasa galleries. I will post here on TCO when a gallery is available. -- TS

Let's start with the good news first: it's spring break and that means vacation for two weeks for me! Ralph McQuarrie's Star Wars pre-production artYay! It's going to be nice to have these two weeks off so I can get some things done that haven't been done thanks to work, school, and swimming.

As for the sad news. A gentleman who any Star Wars fan will know, Ralph McQuarrie, passed away. Mr. McQuarrie did the pre-production artwork for George Lucas on Star Wars. He was the guy that Lucas shared his vision of the Star Wars universe and trusted Ralph to bring his vision to life.

I remember while growing up that my parents had a collection of McQuarrie's prints from Star Wars. My brother and I used to love to look at them and note the subtle (and not so subtle) changes that occurred between these scenes and the final movie. -- TS

In lieu of swim practice tonight, My photo printed for the center piece of the table. I seized the invitation to attend the end of season banquet for the YHS girls water polo team. The head coach sent me a text message eariler in the week extending the invitation, so I was there on a special invite. :)

The banquet was a lot of fun. The girls were all dressed up, their hair done, and looking so different from the way they do on the pool deck. Before the slideshow-movie was shown, the coach extended a thanks to me for the photos and the support I give to YHS water polo. He joking said the only "bad" thing he could say was that I didn't play for YHS in high school, but that I was a Fontana boy. Thanks Matt! :)

Our varsity goalie, in addition to being a great water polo player, is quite an accomplished artist. She sketched the seniors and presented them with a really beautiful print. She told them that they were to take these drawings and have everybody autograph it. I felt honored as the two seniors I know pretty well insisted I sign their picture. They are such sweethearts and I will miss seeing them next year.

I would like to thank Debbie Miller, a mother of one of the players, for burning me a DVD of that night's slideshow of photos from the season. It would be safe to say that every single game action shot in that movie was mine!

Another interesting note of the night was I got to see some of my pictures from this season printed, like this one of senior Emily. I don't know what it is, but it's so strange to me to see my photos in print. I spend so much looking at them on a screen of some sort: like the LCD on the camera or on the computer during editing and publishing. It's sparked to try printing some of my favorites from the season and see how they come out. You can be sure I will share how they come out! -- TS

Today was a treat! First I need to give some background. I've been email friends with a VW guy from Denmark for going on 15 years now. Rolf and I met through my "Tom's Type 4 Corner" web site and after exchanging emails, we just kept the emails coming. Neither one of us has had the money to go see the other, but this year Rolf and his wife Viola were able to swing it to fly out here!! Rolf has a side business of building drag race VW engines, so he wanted to come out to SoCal and meet up with the vendors he deals with.

Of course this also meant he wanted to get together with me. So, today I met up with Rolf and Viola at the Fontana In-N-Out Burger and introduced them to the greatest hamburgers around! Afterwards, they followed me back to my house, and we headed out in their BMW 328i rental car(!). I took them to a spot in Fontana that they had heard of and had seen in the movies: the Auto Club Speedway. That's the NASCAR speedway in western Fontana, and the location where they filmed the race scenes in the 2005 Herbie movie.

Anyways, we had a great time talking and getting to know each other even more. They are a really great couple and it makes me want to go to Denmark even more! Someday... -- TS

Last week I was able to score an addition to my computer stable. HP Elitebook 8740wThis new addition is a Hewlett-Packard Elitebook 8740W. Like my current Elitebook, it's a member of HP's top "portable" workstations. This particular model features an Intel i7 Extreme 1.7GHz four-core CPU (but it can burst to 8 cores if it needs the power), 2GB of RAM (expandable to 32GB!!!), 17 inch screen, a secondary battery, and a 250GB SATA hard drive.

It's definitely not a lightweight machine. It weighs quite a bit, especially being a 17" and the secondary battery, but I'm not too concerned about that. My intentions are to use it at home at my desk as my home machine. That way I can the leave my MacBook Pro in my backpack and not have to pull it out when I want to check Facebook or watch a video.

Right now I'm installing Ubuntu Linux 11.10. My intention is to retire my old Elitebook with this one, so it will definitely have to run Ubuntu. I have plans to upgrade the laptop with a larger hard drive (maybe 750GB-ish) and more RAM (like 16GB). The larger hard drive will also include a dual boot install of Ubuntu and Windows 7, hopefully so I can enjoy some gaming on it.

I'll keep you posted on how this tank comes along! -- TS

Tonight's swim was another personal creation. USMS logoThis workout is called the "Geography Tour" and it consists of three different sets that can be compared to the basic geography types: a mountain (pyramid), flat lands, and a valley (inverted pyramid). Tonight's workout ended at the two mile mark with 3450 yards. If I felt sore the other morning, it's going to be even worse tomorrow morning!

So this is the first week all year that I've been able to get in three workouts. These works helped bring my total on USMS's Go The Distance program at 13.44 miles so far this year. I was really hoping to be at twice this number at this time of the year, but it will have to do. Hopefully I can get some more consistent weeks with three workouts and get to 50 miles soon! -- TS

I always volunteer to take the team photo of YHS MTB team. YHS Mountain Bike Team photoIt helps out the team and since my photography mentor, Scott Kennedy, is a coach on the team, I knew he couldn't take the photo himself. This year we took the photo last Friday afternoon, before the team practice. Scott had found a great spot just outside of the school fence, on a hill overlooking the school and the nearby mountains and hills.

Well, this evening Scott posted the team photo on Facebook for everyone to enjoy. As I look at it, it reminds me how much this team has grown. Mike and Scott have done a great job getting more students to join the team and this year looks really great. One area that this team has really grown is the girls team. This year we have seven young ladies who are committed to the sport. This will really help the team when it comes time for their first race, which is this weekend. A portion of the team's overall scoring comes from your female riders and in years past we have had only one or two young ladies on the team. With this year's boost, it will help the team to do even bettter. -- TS

Ok, let's hope the FPAC pool is finally fixed and that it will work consistently from now on! USMS logoTonight was my first night back in FPAC since they had to close it again for a pool heater failure. I hear that the heater was too small for the pool (as a cost saving manuever during construction) and that thanks to chemical imbalance, the pipes in and out of the heater were calcified over.

I was able to get in 2700 yards tonight. I'm also now using an Android app called Swim Draft Pro to track my workouts and yarage. Tonight's workout was a personal creation that I call "The Welcome Back 300". It consisted of sets that were 300 yds or multiples of 300 yds. I was able to get in a lot of breaststroke too, as it seems apparent that my teammates aren't too keen for doing breaststroke. That means that I'm the one they ask to swim breaststroke in the medley relays.

I'm a little sore right now, but I know i'm going to be really sore tomorrow morning. :) -- TS

For the last eight to nine months, I've been using Twitter to follow some of the big names in swimming. Swim cap worn by US water polo player Heather PetriThese swimmers include Summer Sanders, Natalie Coughlin, Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte, Rowdy Gaines, and others. Well one day Summer Sanders posted a video interview she did with Heather Petri, a member of the US National Team womens' water polo team. I'm not as familiar with the water polo players, but I had to give it a watch. It was a fun interview to watch with these two women who have made their mark on US aquatics. I started following Heather (@PeteIsAGirl) on Twitter after the video.

Yesterday Heather posted a request for women that were survivors of breast cancer or who had last their battle. It seemed that the US National team was playing in a tournament here in souther California and they were dedicating the next game to breast cancer awareness. They were going to wear pink swim caps underneath their water polo cap and they wanted names to write on the caps. I tweeted Heather with my mom's name and how she was a water polo mom. Heather thanked me for her name and conveyed her condolences.

Today Heather shared photos of her swim cap and if you look in the lower right corner of the photo, you will see my mom's name! It was so great to have my mom commerated this way! I sent a tweet back to Heather and thanked her for doing this.

On of the great things about this whole thing is that me, a normal everyday guy, got a chance to exchange messages with a top Olympic athlete. I feel so lucky that my sport of choice has such great ambassadors. Go Team USA!!! -- TS

The play-off game was today. I was ready to shoot it, but the inclement weather kept me from shooting the game. It poured rain for pretty much the whole game and I can assure as much as I wanted to, I was not going to pull out my camera with the pouring rain. There is too much money wrapped up in the equipment to ruin it in the rain. So that means no photos from today's game.

Today's game was against Walnut High. Our ladies played well but Walnut played better and they came out with the win and advancing to the second round of playoffs. I wished Walnut the best of luck. -- TS

February 12, 2012

This morning CIF published the play-off pairings for girls water polo. CIF logoOur coach told me to check the CIF website, as they would be publishing it at 11AM today. I checked at promptly at 11am and sure enough, the play-off brackets were there.

Our Lady TBirds will be playing Walnut High on Wednesday at our CHC pool!! That means one more game for me to shoot! Fun!! I don't know anything about Walnut, but I hope that our girls are able to play their best and come out of the pool as victors. We will have to wait and see! -- TS

February 10, 2012

Thanks to the wind and the "it's not fixed yet" pool heater, we've had to hold our team practices at the Heritage Village pool. USMS LogoEven though this pool was around when I was in high school, I never actually swam there, so it's been an interesting experience. I was last night, but thanks to the small pool size and the multitude of activities that FPAC had to relocate there, we were only able to swim for one hour last night.

Tonight was different. We were able to ocupy the pool for two hours tonight, but thanks to my not being the pool regularly, I was only able to muster 2800 yds tonight. I was also the only swimmer there tonight; most of our swimmers had made plans to do other things.

I really hope that they get the FPAC pool fixed correctly this time because I need to be swimming regularly. I'd really like to do some more USMS events, but I'm nowhere near being in shape for one. :(-- TS

This is it, the last game of the regular season for our ladies. YHS GWP vs. REVToday's game is against the league powerhouse, Redlands East Valley. Our girls did well in the first quarter and it was looking like we might be able to get one win against REV this year, but REV came back in the second quarter and regained control of the game. We couldn't seem to stop the REV juggernaut and REV ended up with the win in the end.

I was able to grab some good shots today, but I thought this photo was great. It is our junior varsity team as they sat in the bleachers waiting for the start of the game. These young ladies were doing their best to cheer on the varsity. Great job ladies of showing team spirit!

You'll find the rest of my photos at the usual location, my Picasa photo gallery. I'd love to hear how you enjoyed them! -- TS

February 5, 2012

This afternoon one of my swim teammates, Luca, came by my house to take me up on my offer to help him out. Luca had mentioned that he was looking to get into doing triathlons, but his bicycle wasn't in great shape. I told him to bring it by sometime and we'd take a look at it.

Luca stuffed his bike in his car and came over. As we were getting it out of the car, it was obvious that this was going to be a challenge. The "bike" (and I use the term loosely) was a department store multi-speed beach cruiser that someone had left outside. It was in a pretty sad shape but the price was right: he got it for free. So that afternoon I inspected the bike, replaced the tubes, and gave it a simple clean-up/tune-up. I urged Luca that if he's serious about doing triathlons, this bike wasn't going to work. The cheap parts used on "department store" bikes rarely works right, and when it does, it won't stay that way long. The bike must have weighed in the 40-50 lbs range. It would be fine for him to initially train with, but it was going to be a moneypit if he intends to put any kind of mileage on it.

That evening, as a thanks for helping him out, we headed over to CostCo and he bought us dinner: a soda and a pepperoni & cheese pizza. It was a great end to a fun Sunday. -- TS

As a photographer, I hate shooting the water polo games at Beaumont High School. YHS GWP vs. BeaumontWhy you ask? This picture shows why. The pool is surrounded on three sides by a tall building, so in the late afternoon it places a shadow on pool and you end up with a pool that is partially lit and and partially dark. Photos from the area that straddles both the lit and unlit areas makes the photographs come out mediocre.

As for the game itself, I'm happy to report that our Thunderbirds came out on top. Beaumont has a couple of really good players, but lucky our talented young ladies were able to keep them from dominating the game. One memorable play involved the Beaumont goalie and Sarah Allen. The goalie decided to come out of the cage to retrieve the ball after blocking a shot, and instead of letting her have the ball, Sarah went after her to see if she could get a steal and get a shot into a cage that was wide open. As the goalie and Sarah scrambled towards me, I kept shooting, hoping that I could get a good photo or two of the bunch. With all of the splashing water, most of the photos weren't usable, but I did manage to get a couple of really good ones of Sarah. It was an exciting moment!

If you want to see the photos from the game, check out my Picasa photo gallery of the game. -- TS

Today's girls water polo game was the third league meeting between YHS and Fontana High. YHS GWP vs. IkeThe victor of this game would secure second place in the Citrus Belt League and secure a game against a comparable placed opponent for the first round CIF game. Both teams played quite well, as they both wanted that second place in league, but our TBirds came out on top! Congratulations ladies!

As I mentioed earlier, this win places us in second place in CBL and in the CIF play-offs. The ladies will be playing against another second place team from another league, so it gives us a good shot at advancing in play-offs. FoHi finished in third place and they will play a first place team from another league. The Lady Steelers are going to have a difficult time, but I wish them my best! And finally, the icing on the cake... Redlands will not be going to play-offs this year. They had two losses to both us and Fontana, so they were eliminated from the play-offs. :)

This was a fun game to shoot. The play was intense and there were some great plays from both teams. My photo gallery is posted, so you know the drill! -- TS

January 25, 2012

I've said this in the past, but I think it bears repeating. YHS GWPI admire the determination that's coming out of Eisenhower High School in Rialto. In spite of the struggles they've had with a sport that they get little to no support from the community, it's good to see the Eagles coming out and giving it their all. The Ike players and coaches are always very friendly. I admire this because they are playing the sport not because they are want an easy win but beause they love the sport. This is what the sport needs more of: playing the sport for the fun of it.

Of course Eisenhower gave it their all, but in the end the TBirds came out with another league win. As I watched this game, I was noticing the great contributions and improvements that came from the freshman players. Almost all of these young ladies have never picked up a water polo ball before this year and they seem to be learning quite a bit. Their play time and the experience gained this year make the outlook for next year to be bright.

The sun was bright today and it showed in the photos. I got some great photos, including this one of junior Sarah Allen as she works her way above two Ike players to take a shot. Check out my photo gallery from the game and as usual, let me know what you think! -- TS

The Star Wars geek in me loves this! Star Wars Uncut It seems that an online project came about with a goal of telling the Star Wars: A New Hope movie using user supplied footage. This project, Star Wars Uncut, gained a lot of support from many different folks out there and in about a two year time they've gathered all of the necessary clips and the project organizers have completed the editting and have released the final project.

I haven't been able to watch all of the film yet, but I've been able to watch the first 20 minutes. What's my impression of it? It's absolutely hilarious! You have the full spectrum of styles of scenes. The movie was cut up into 15 second chunks, and each person could recreate that 15 second scene however they wanted. Some people used their knowledge of computer animation and created some really cools scenes. Others used a handheld video camera and filmed it in their office or home. There were some really great scenes that were created by young children with improvised props.

It is definitely something I am going to watch all of the way through and I highly recommend it to anyone who's a Star Wars fan. -- TS

The YHS girls soccer coach asked me if I could help her out and come on out to their game today against AB Miller High School with my camera. YHS girls soccer vs. A.B. MillerI've only ever shot soccer one time before, so I thought I'd give it a try again. Lucky for me, I ended up meeting Carat Mitts watching the game from the sideline. Carat is an English teacher at YHS and a soccer player herself. As we hung out on the sideline, she was able to give me some pointers on the game and where I might get some good shots.

So how did the photos come out? Not as good as I had hoped. They are all in focus and properly exposed of course, but I just don't seem to getting the shots that I'm used to getting in water polo. Most of the photos are relatively boring. I'm going to have to do some more research on good soccer shots and learn more details about the sport. I think this is one of the reasons I like my water polo photos; I am able to anticipate what's going to happen in the game and what the players are thinking.

If you want to see the photos I deemed acceptable to publish from today, you'll find a photo gallery on my Picasa account. If you've got any suggestions on what I can do to get more shots, let me know! -- TS

The YHS-Redlands High games are always intense. YHS GWPNerves are always on end. The rivalary between these two schools is just intense, and in girls water polo it's even more so. Redlands has always been a force in girls water polo in the area, and Yucaipa is working on overcoming the RHS strong hold. This is why today's loss was crushing. This is the second (of three) league games that our lady TBirds will play against RHS, and the first time our lady TBirds came out victorious. Apparently the RHS team wasn't too happy about the loss and they wanted the win to even up the record.

Of course I was on deck, armed with my camera and got some great shots of the game. This particular photo is if senior Caroline as she attempts to make a shot and her opponent grabs her forearm. Check out my photo gallery from this game and let me know what you think!

After the game, I headed back home to gather up my swim gear. Yep, tonight is my first night back in the pool. It's been over a month and a half since I last swam, so I'm really looking forward to getting back in and working off those pounds that seem to have accrued lately. -- TS

Today was a day-off from work for me, so I was expecting to a have a quiet day in Fontana at home. SR-71 Blackbird Det. 6After sleeping in, I had a leisurely morning and was getting ready to do some work around the house when I got a phone call. The call came from Mark Anderson, the YHS Athletic Director. He called because he was going to need someone to help with the basketball games that afternoon/evening. I'm always up for some extra pay, so I agreed.

After running the shot clock for the freshman game (the first of the afternoon), I joined my co-worker Marianne who was selling the game tickets. As we were talking about this and that, I mentioned that Kevin Lewis and I had gone to the March Field Air Museum in November and how I finally got to see the inside of the SR-71. It was what came out of Marianne's mouth next that had me floored.

Apparently, before joining the Yucaipa Calimesa Joint Unified School District, she worked as a civilian administrative assistant at Norton Air Force Base. The shocking part was she work in " Det 6", or Detachment 6. Det 6 was one of the support groups for the SR-71 in the early 1980s and knew pilots, RSOs, and engineers involved in the support of SR-71!!

Of course being the Blackbird junkie that I am, I couldn't get enough of what she had done there. She told me about the pilots and how secret the project was. I asked her about her security clearance and she said that at the time she had "secret" clearance. Marianne also mentioned that she had some photos from her time there that she'd bring in to share with me. You can be sure that I will scan those photos and share them here at TCO!

It's truly amazing what people do in their lives before you meet them. -- TS

This morning I got my usual selection of daily emails from various sources. Bicycling Magazine logoAs I was going through it, I saw this Bicycling Magazine article about an obese guy who lost 320 lbs by riding his bicycle. It chronicles the difficulties he's had along the way, including his difficulties in finding a bike able to hold his weight safely. As I read it, I related to it in many ways. Like this guy, I'm obese, that's obvious fact, but the fact is I'm nowhere near as bad as he was when he started riding. I am able to swim two (or more) miles in one session, I can get on a bike and ride for 10+ miles. He had difficulties getting out his bike and riding around the block.

Nevertheless, I was inspired by this, giving me the extra resolve to keep going with my fitness plan. I'm grateful that I'm not in the same predictament that he's, but I know that if I don't keep up with living a healthier lifestyle, I can be there. So I was to thank Bicycling Magazine for writing the article and sharing it with us. It's good to see an article about someone who isn't already pencil thin and in top shape, but who enjoys the sport and is using it to get to a healthier state. Kudos!! -- TS

Tonight is the next step towards earning my bachelor's degree. This evening was the first meeting of Math 251 (Multi-Variable Calculus I). This is the last of the classes I took when I was at CSUSB 15 years ago, so it's going to be my last review class. Next quarter will be all new: Math 252 (Multi-Variable Calculus II). I'm looking forward to this class and being able to be able to actually take some new classes next quarter. :) -- TS

For the last couple of days, I've been looking for information on how to set up Apple's Moc OSX Lion Server software. Apple Inc. We are working on a project at work on using a new Mac Mini with the Lion Server software to work as the file server and user log-in server. We want the server to provide these services to our new fleet of Imacs. Primarily we want to map the user account home directories to a Thunderbolt disk array that's connected to the Mini. This way all of the users will be able to seamlessly access files across the network and if there is a hardware failure on the client side, all of the user files will be safely stored on the server.

Of course this is easier said than done. It seems that Apple isn't interested in providing such a service to their users. The more I read about Lion Server, it's become apparent in spite of it's UNIX background, Mac OSX isn't up for the job of file server and user authenication. -- TS

Well, the fun is over!! My brother, sister-in-law and their kids were able to spend the holidays with us in California this year. It was so fun to be able to see them and get to spend time hanging out. I enjoyed my time with my nephew and niece, as they are so much fun!! They left yesterday morning and drove back to Colorado. Thanks CO Sliders for spending the time with us. I hope that I can make it up there someday soon! -- TS

Ok, let's get the pressing business out of the way: HAPPY NEW YEAR 2012!!!

A new year is always an exciting time. It's a new chance to make the year the best you've had so far. It's the opportunity to wipe away the past and concentrate on making the next twelve months more memorable and rewarding. The new year is also a time to try new things.

For me, 2012 was definitely a year of many changes. If you've followed along with my posts here at TCO, you know I've had many changes in the past year. Probably the biggest changes came to my rejoining the aquatics world. In March I started swimming three days a week at the Fontana Parks Aquatic Center (FPAC). Initially each workout was about 1700 yards; for those of you who aren't familiar with that number, that's roughly about one mile. As the months went by, I gradually increased my distance to something in the low 2000 yard distance.

At the end of June I discovered that the FPAC was looking to start a US Masters swim team. They had hired a young man to be the coach and they already had two gentleman swimming. The coach, named Alex, was really welcoming and told me to join them for some workouts. Since that moment, I've been a member of the team and I've had a blast with the people who I swim with. I even participated in two USMS swim meets, thanks to the encouraging words of my teammates!Well, this is going a bit longer than I had intended.

For 2012, I intend to keep swimming, to keep pursuing my education, and to adopt a healthy lifestyle. I hope that 2012 is a great year! -- TS
